New Parent Shuttle Service
Free Transportation Offered to Area Shopping
Blythedale is pleased to offer a new, free shuttle service to parents of patients undergoing care at the Hospital. This new initiative is sponsored by the Blythedale Advisory Council through fundraising efforts to provide additional support for moms and dads looking to grab some groceries, make a quick run to the bank or even grab a cup of coffee and some “me” time. The inaugural ride kicked off on September 27th with a handful of excited parents participating.
“It piqued my interest because not being from around here, not knowing the area and not having a car, I can get out and buy food and even make my own meals,” said Christina Carrillo of New Paltz, New York, as she sat in her son’s patient room. “You spend days or weeks, living in a hospital, and it feels good to be able to get out and feel like a person again.”
Blythedale’s Chief Engagement and Experience Officer Susan Murray adds that the shuttle service is designed to help promote independence for families. “We really wanted to make it easier for parents to be able to take care of their business and do what they want to do without feeling like they are dependent on somebody else,” she said. It also provides a therapeutic opportunity for parents to spend some time together and discuss similar stories. “They have so much in common with having sick children here in the Hospital and they will be able to just do normal things parents do on the outside.”
Interested parents can take advantage of the shuttle every Wednesday in the early afternoon. Service currently travels to Rose Hill Shopping Center in Thornwood and returns one-hour later to the Hospital. Sign-up sheets are located in the Social Work office.
